Attention: as of Feb 20, 2018 FVA Operations Postponed Indefinitely

It is with tremendous regret that the Florida Velodrome Association postpones the remaining 2017-18 race schedule and suspends operations indefinitely until there is a proper, local race director and a committed pool of volunteers. We deeply apologize to all riders who had plans to attend the remaining four races on our schedule. We are making efforts to reschedule the state championships with a nearby state.

The FVA began serving the Piccolo track community, USA Cycling, and American Track Racing Association in 2009. We initially offered seasonal weekday racing and USAC state championships, as well as supporting local riders with training sessions and established the Youth Force program for local low income young men and women sponsored by Memorial Hospital. We also provided Brian Piccolo and Broward Parks with valid reasons to keep the track accessible, maintained, and the lights on at night.

In 2015, we shifted our races from weeknights to weekend nights, which brought in many more riders from around the state who didn’t have to sacrifice a day or two of work to come to the track and race. All of the additional racers were welcomed and the larger field sizes made for better quality racing in all groups.

However, since 2015 we have been losing important personnel out a pool that was very small and overworked to begin with. First Tim Sherrill, our main official, had a job transfer back to the Seattle area. Then Carlos Laborde passed away in August 2016. And Carl Sundquist moved away in September 2017. It has been stressed repeatedly that the track needs to be supported by volunteers. All FVA personnel have been volunteers from the first day and have given thousands and thousands and thousands of hours of their own time and opened their wallets and given thousands of dollars to help the race program succeed. Many times the officials refused rightful payment for their services in order to help sustain the track, in addition to driving more than an hour each way to be there for races. But despite requests, the pool of volunteers never came to be, meaning an already hard task of operating the FVA and its activities was even harder because it had to be shouldered by so few people.

We all want to make sure the races start on time, end on time, and everyone is safe and has a good time. Currently, without a local race director and volunteers, that is not possible.

We want to thank everyone who has been involved with the track and the FVA over the past 9 years, especially Ben Suero, Carl Sundquist, John Worcester and the Worcester family, and FVA Founder Jose Basulto.
